Overview

To explore Namibia is to discover its landscape, from the terra-cotta coloured dunes of Sossusvlei to the tawny sands of the Kalahari. The country is dominated by the Namib Desert and arid dry savannah. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. It is a place where guests can experience space under the open skies. The landscape offers many different tones making it perfect for photographers.

Along the western coast, the desert stretched for thousands of miles with the largest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei and the evocative skeletons of broken ships stranded on the shore along the Skeleton Coast. Discover the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon on Earth after the Grand Canyon in America.

Windhoek and iconic African tribes.

Namibia was a German colony and the Germanic influence is still seen in the Bavarian art-deco inspired architecture of Swakopmund and many buildings in downtown Windhoek. German is commonly spoken; beer and German-style foods are common.

But this is not the full story as the local Herero people are bringing their local culture to the fore. Many guests now enjoy a tour of Katutura the historic township on the outskirts of Windhoek where they will see Namibia’s cultural diversity.

Guests can also learn about the culture of the San people who have lived in this harsh environment for millennia. Footprints Safaris also works with OvaHimba communities in a sustainable manner. These people are renowned for their traditional way of life – covering themselves in ochre clay and animal fat. They are one of the most iconic African tribes.

When it comes to safaris, the highlight is Etosha National Park. A series of permanent waterholes on the edge of the usually dry Etosha Pan provide water for wildlife in this arid region. As a result, large numbers of various species of animal can be found, making for fabulous photos against the pale desert background.

Footprints Safaris works with several excellent lodges and accommodations in Namibia which offer exemplary service, contribute to helping local communities and making a real impact to conserve the wildlife regions of the country.
