The town of Vilanculos is the gateway to many of Mozambique’s attractions like Inhambane and the Bazaruto Archipelago. There are several regional flights into the airport here and connecting flights to Mozambique’s famous islands. There is a wide range of accommodation options in the town and many visitors take advantage of day excursions to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago.

Vilanculos has several beautiful beaches for visitors to relax on. Setting out for a sunset cruise in a traditional boat called a dhow is a popular activity. Diving and snorkelling excursions to the nearby Bazaruto National Park in search of species including manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and Humpback Whales in season are popular.
Deep-sea fishing, especially for Black Marlin, is a major attraction in the waters surrounding this Mozambique marine park from October to February. A variety of Tuna species are also found in this area or visitors can try their hand at salt-water fly fishing.
